“I don’t know when mom first discovered Amy Grant’s triple platinum ‘Home for Christmas’ album. I never asked because I’m a rotten son. But I imagine she first heard it on one of those creepy Christian music radio stations. Stuck in an hour-long car commute during the deadly Northeast December snow. I imagine my yammering baby brother in the back seat, and my tired mother looking out across the slick freeway, wondering if she had gotten any part of her life right. And then bang: ‘Breath of Heaven’ hits the airwaves, and my mom turns it up.

For one month of the year, Amy Grant would BLARE from the family 5-disc CD stereo, waking us up for school. Mom turned it up so loud, you couldn’t even hear the bus coming. She turned it up so loud, you couldn’t hear your yammering baby brother in the back seat. You couldn’t hear that horrible thing your husband just screamed at you, or the awful thing you came back at him with. So I don’t really mess with Amy Grant, because I think she may have saved a family.” - Paul Nelson
